Data interpretation is a time-consuming subject but one that cannot be ignored in the IBPS, SSC, SBI PO, Clerical, and other competitive exams. If you are able to solve about 60% of the questions on data interpretation, you can easily pass the mathematics section.Â
Another reason this cannot be ignored is because withdrawal, deposit, and other such bank operations involve statistical work. When you are knowledgeable in data interpretation, you will be able to contribute to a smooth working environment. So, here are some tips to ace this part of the bank exams.
- Data is in four basic forms namely numerical, table, mixed, and in bar graph or line graph format. For the graphs or charts, knowing the type of graph used mostly hints at the right answer. 100% is interpreted as 360 degrees in charts and graphs.
- Make sure you know the formulas and the basics of average, percentage, value, ratios, and approximation.
- The entire DA pattern is influenced by calculation. If you want to score in data interpretation and analysis, avoid using acalculator when you practice the questions at home. This helps you calculate accurately and fast even with large numbers.
- During exams, avoid choosing questions that require time-consuming calculation. If it is possible to use shortcuts or tricks to finish the question in less time, you can use them too.
- Knowledge about which type of question to select and which to discard and use of pen/mental calculation/approximation for calculation are must to get through this section.
- Some questions will have the answers in the diagrams given. So you need to read the questions and look at the images carefully. For such questions, it is not necessary to use a pen for doing calculations on paper.
- Some of the questions do not require precise answers. Approximate values are adequate. This way you can save time and effort in such questions.
- Some of the answers to the questions would be similar to those you have previously calculated. If so, use those answers. You need not calculate again and waste your time.
- Focus more on ratios, averages, and percentages as these are the three most significant topics covered in data interpretation. Learn the shortcuts, formulas, and other smart tricks to help speed up the calculations.
- The speed at which you do the calculation depends on how well you have practiced and more precisely the approach you have used. Speed and accuracy go hand in hand in deciding your success. So, evaluate your performance at every level and make the necessary improvements to the sections you are weak in. This will certainly help you score well in the exam.
- Use visual approximation in line charts and bar graph questions. Before you begin with the calculation, try eliminating few of the options with visual clues. Just by viewing the line graph or pie chart, you can rule out some of the answers. This will leave you with few options to choose from and hence fewer calculation and less time.
Data interpretation is easy to solve when you practice well, interpret the information provided, and then start solving. Missing even a single detail can lead to a wrong answer. Banks have added this part specifically to test the capability of candidates in handling all types of numerical relationships. With the above tips, you can easily score high marks in the data interpretation section. All the very best!
